Where Have You Been?

I think I lost perspective somewhere in the middle of the last development cycle. That would have been, uh… December. Yeah, that sounds right. Somewhere after Thanksgiving but before Christmas I definitely lost perspective. Or maybe I just set it down somewhere, intending to pick it up later. It hardly matters now, since I don’t remember where I put it. At this point, I’ll almost certainly have to get a new one.

Most recently this struck me last weekend when I was talking to my project manager. Via IM. At 11pm. Because they just sort of know I’ll be working that late most nights, you see. And I was telling her that maybe if I had time next week, I’d go through the Future Enhancements list and categorize them, make a task list and estimate some Level Of Efforts. “Just for fun,” I told her.

When you use the phrases “estimated Level Of Effort” and “just for fun” in the same sentence, it’s a cry for help. Write that on your wall, it’s the sort of thing they’ll never teach you in Nerd School.
